Experience how light and color work together to create atmosphere, depth, and visual rhythm within an illustration or sequential page. Through targeted studies and guided observation, you’ll learn how hue, value, and temperature interact to establish mood, clarify form, and support the emotional tone of a scene.
We’ll explore strategies for composing with intention—organizing shapes, contrasts, and spatial relationships to lead the viewer’s eye and strengthen narrative flow. By understanding how visual space can communicate story just as effectively as character or dialogue, you’ll gain tools to construct images that feel cohesive, expressive, and purposeful.
About the Instructor – Frank Espinosa
Frank Espinosa attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, specializing in film and animation. Early in his career, he worked for Walt Disney Animation, later becoming Art Director at Warner Bros., where he created an award-winning character design manual, redesigned the Looney Tunes characters, and developed Baby Looney Tunes as well as the full series of Looney Tunes postage stamps.
He was awarded the Martin Luther King Visiting Professor Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2006 and 2007, lectured at the Ohio State University and the Collins College Lecture Series, and developed a comics series for Princeton University.
Espinosa also created and illustrated a graphic novel based on the life of Salvatore Ferragamo, with illustrations displayed in shop windows around the world. His graphic novel Rocketo was nominated for three Eisner Awards.
He has served as Art Director for Zum Zum Books and is currently illustrating new editions of Frankenstein, Dracula, Candide, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, to be published in Italy.
